Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can I book an appointment with Dr. Ganesh?

Booking an appointment with Dr. Ganesh is straightforward. The first step is to obtain a referral from your GP or specialist. We recommend emailing a copy of the referral to us (referral@specialistpainclinic.com.au) for expedited processing.

What happens after I provide the referral?

Once we receive your referral, we will text you to acknowledge receipt and provide details on how to request further correspondence from the Specialist Pain Clinic. You will receive a welcome letter, privacy form and our new patient questionnaire in the mail. However, to expedite this process, you can send us a request via email to: referral@specialistpainclinic.com.au

After completing these forms, please return them via email or by post.

The Specialist Pain Clinic does not have a permanent clinic location for you to deliver your completed forms in person. If you are having trouble returning your forms, please get in touch with us on 0423 333 176.

How soon can I expect an appointment after submitting the forms?

Once we’ve received and reviewed your completed questionnaire, we will contact you to schedule or discuss an appointment. We aim to schedule initial appointments within a week or as soon as possible in one of our clinic locations.

What types of patients does Dr. Ganesh see?

Dr. Ganesh only sees patients with private insurance that are covered for in-hospital pain management procedures (active hospital cover), Workers' compensation, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA), and Insurance Commission of WA (ICWA).

What if I have a workers’ compensation or MVA claim?

You will need to provide us with the details of your claim and the name of your case manager on the new patient questionnaire that we send to you. This is so we can email a letter to your insurance company requesting pre-approval and funding for your appointment with Dr. Ganesh. We will also email x4 additional forms that you will need to complete and return in preparation for your appointment. Once we receive an outcome from your insurance company, we will contact you to arrange an appointment.

Does Dr. Ganesh see patients without health funds?

Dr. Ganesh only performs pain management procedures at a private hospital, so having a health fund is essential.

Dr. Ganesh does not accept self-funding for pain management procedures.

However, Dr. Ganesh provides public pain management services at Fiona Stanley Hospital. We strongly recommend that your doctor arrange a referral to a public hospital for your pain management services.

How long do appointments typically last?

A standard appointment is approximately 15 minutes long.

Pain Management Procedures

Pulse radiofrequency neurotomy (PRFN)

High-frequency electrical energy in brief pulses (PRFN) prevents the development of heat and can, therefore, be safely applied to most nerves. PRFN has been established as an effective treatment for spinal, joint, and neuropathic pain, including radicular pain (sciatica) and occipital neuralgia.

Epidurals

An epidural injection is often performed for radicular pain (sciatica) when a nerve root is irritated or compressed. It can be performed in the neck (cervical spine), upper back (thoracic spine), or lower back (lumbosacral spine). It may also help treat back pain from disc disease (discogenic pain).

Thermal radiofrequency neurotomy (TRFN/Rhizotomy)

Thermal radiofrequency
neurotomy is a needle-based procedure used to treat pain originating from posterior spinal
structures, such as the facet or sacroiliac joints. The procedure involves inserting needles into
the medial branch nerve that supplies the joints at the back of the spine.

Joint injections

Joint injections are a standard minimally invasive treatment used by chronic pain management clinics to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and improve mobility. They are typically recommended when conservative measures like physiotherapy or oral medications have not provided sufficient relief.

Peripheral nerve injections

Peripheral nerve injections (or nerve blocks) are a core interventional treatment in chronic pain management. They involve injecting a local anaesthetic, often combined with a corticosteroid, near a specific nerve or group of nerves to interrupt pain signals and reduce inflammation.

Conditions

The Specialist Pain Clinic provides comprehensive, head-to-toe care for an extensive range of conditions, including complex head and facial neuralgias, chronic spinal issues, and joint pain. Our expertise also extends to specialized treatments for musculoskeletal injuries, nerve entrapments, and systemic conditions such as fibromyalgia and long COVID syndrome.

The pain conditions treated:

Whole-body pain

This addresses widespread or systemic discomfort affecting multiple regions at once, often related to chronic syndromes, hormonal shifts, or post-viral recovery.

Head & Facial Pain

Treatments focus on intense, recurring pain within the skull and face, including complex nerve disorders and various chronic headache patterns.

Neck pain conditions

Ailments involving the cervical spine, including nerve irritation, muscle strain, and joint dysfunction in the neck area.

Shoulder and upper limbs pain

Comprehensive care for pain originating in the joints and soft tissues of the arms, focusing on inflammation, overuse injuries, and nerve entrapments from the shoulder to the hand.

Upper Spine and Thoracic Pain

Focuses on discomfort within the mid-back and chest wall, including nerve pain following surgery or injuries to the ribs and thoracic vertebrae.

Abdominal pain conditions:

Addresses persistent internal discomfort within the abdominal region, often stemming from organ inflammation or localized nerve compression in the abdominal wall.

Pelvic pain conditions

Specialized management for chronic pain in the lower pelvic and groin areas, including nerve-related, reproductive, and bladder-based conditions

Lower spine and sacral pain conditions

Targets issues in the lower back and tailbone region, commonly involving nerve root irritation, spinal narrowing, and joint dysfunction.

Pain conditions of the Hip and lower limbs

Covers chronic pain and mobility issues affecting the lower extremities, ranging from joint inflammation in the hips and knees to tendon injuries in the feet.
