Pain Management Procedures
Pulse radiofrequency neurotomy (PRFN)
High-frequency electrical energy in brief pulses (PRFN) prevents the development of heat and can, therefore, be safely applied to most nerves. PRFN has been established as an effective treatment for spinal, joint, and neuropathic pain, including radicular pain (sciatica) and occipital neuralgia.
Epidurals
An epidural injection is often performed for radicular pain (sciatica) when a nerve root is irritated or compressed. It can be performed in the neck (cervical spine), upper back (thoracic spine), or lower back (lumbosacral spine). It may also help treat back pain from disc disease (discogenic pain).
Thermal radiofrequency neurotomy (TRFN/Rhizotomy)
Thermal radiofrequency
neurotomy is a needle-based procedure used to treat pain originating from posterior spinal
structures, such as the facet or sacroiliac joints. The procedure involves inserting needles into
the medial branch nerve that supplies the joints at the back of the spine.
Joint injections
Joint injections are a standard minimally invasive treatment used by chronic pain management clinics to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and improve mobility. They are typically recommended when conservative measures like physiotherapy or oral medications have not provided sufficient relief.
Peripheral nerve injections
Peripheral nerve injections (or nerve blocks) are a core interventional treatment in chronic pain management. They involve injecting a local anaesthetic, often combined with a corticosteroid, near a specific nerve or group of nerves to interrupt pain signals and reduce inflammation.
Conditions
The Specialist Pain Clinic provides comprehensive, head-to-toe care for an extensive range of conditions, including complex head and facial neuralgias, chronic spinal issues, and joint pain. Our expertise also extends to specialized treatments for musculoskeletal injuries, nerve entrapments, and systemic conditions such as fibromyalgia and long COVID syndrome.
The pain conditions treated:
Whole-body pain
This addresses widespread or systemic discomfort affecting multiple regions at once, often related to chronic syndromes, hormonal shifts, or post-viral recovery.
Head & Facial Pain
Treatments focus on intense, recurring pain within the skull and face, including complex nerve disorders and various chronic headache patterns.
Neck pain conditions
Ailments involving the cervical spine, including nerve irritation, muscle strain, and joint dysfunction in the neck area.
Shoulder and upper limbs pain
Comprehensive care for pain originating in the joints and soft tissues of the arms, focusing on inflammation, overuse injuries, and nerve entrapments from the shoulder to the hand.
Upper Spine and Thoracic Pain
Focuses on discomfort within the mid-back and chest wall, including nerve pain following surgery or injuries to the ribs and thoracic vertebrae.
Abdominal pain conditions:
Addresses persistent internal discomfort within the abdominal region, often stemming from organ inflammation or localized nerve compression in the abdominal wall.
Pelvic pain conditions
Specialized management for chronic pain in the lower pelvic and groin areas, including nerve-related, reproductive, and bladder-based conditions
Lower spine and sacral pain conditions
Targets issues in the lower back and tailbone region, commonly involving nerve root irritation, spinal narrowing, and joint dysfunction.
Pain conditions of the Hip and lower limbs
Covers chronic pain and mobility issues affecting the lower extremities, ranging from joint inflammation in the hips and knees to tendon injuries in the feet.
